The best leased line providers – other factors to consider

1. Understanding coverage is critical

The first thing you should establish is which providers can deliver their core network to your business. You might have seen a fantastic offer publicised, but if the provider is not in your area the chances are you'll be looking at a prohibitive installation fee. The best way to find a great deal is to compare all of the providers that can serve your business location.

2. Contract length

Most leased line providers will offer free-of-charge installation fees if you commit to a 36-month contract. It's a long-term commitment so you have to be sure that you're making the right choice, but the benefits can be significant. You can expect to see an install fee of £1,000 to £10,000 absorbed by the provider if you are willing to commit to 36 months or more.

3. Work out your total contract value

Some providers will add installation fees to reduce monthly leased line rental charges, and others will reduce or even eliminate set up fees but inflate your monthly rental charge. It is important to work out the cost of the service in its entirety over the full term of your contract to ascertain the total cost of the contract.

4. Speeds are crucial – but don’t be fooled

“Up to” leased line speeds might look attractive, but will they deliver? Many providers lead with hefty speed numbers, but the actual speeds you will experience with some broadband products will not live up to your expectations.

Contended services are shared with other businesses and almost always deliver disappointing speeds. FTTC is limited by the distance you are from the provider's point of presence. One significant advantage of a leased line is that the speed you are quoted will be the speed you receive – as guaranteed by the SLAs in your contract.

What else do I need to look out for?

There's a lot of financial support for businesses looking to install fibre. The gigabit voucher scheme is one such programme that offers up to £3000 if you're thinking of installing a 100Mb line or higher on a 1Gb fibre bearer.
